Review of Purina Second Nature Dog Litter. How to litterbox house train your dog and more.
The owner of my local Global Pet Foods store recently introduced me to a new product called Fresh News cat litter when I was picking up another supply of Purina Yesterday’s News which I use in the dog litter box for my Lhasa Apso dogs Chester and Roxie. We’ve been combining Yesterday’s News with the Purina Second Nature dog litter and the Petco brand we buy from our trips to Niagara Falls, New York.
Then combine these official dog litter brands with either Fresh News or Yesterday’s News you can buy up here in Canada. We like to use the smaller pellets (Fresh News and Yesterday’s News) as the bottom layer with the larger pellets of Second Nature and Petco as the top layer in the dog litter box. The larger pellets help weigh down the smaller pellets to minimize tracking.

Despitethese complications, I was relatively satisfied with the paper methodfor my little dogs. After both of my first two dogs hadpassed away after long lives, I took a breakas a dog owner for several years. When it was time to become dog owneragain, I had made up my mind to train my new pair of lhasa apso puppiesto use papers indoors as well. This time, it turned out that Purina hadcome out with a new litter box system called Second Nature designed forspecifically for dogs.Although these two products are the same, Second Nature comes in much larger pellets. I find that when toilet training puppies, the larger and heavier pellets in the dog litter box results in much less tracking. Tracking is when my dogs jump out of the litter box and some of the dog litter pellets spatter on the floor. Second Nature pellets tend to stay inside the litter box but the much smaller Yesterday’s News pellets do not. As a result, there is always a bit of Yesterday’s News pellets around the floor since they are so light. In my mind, the dog litter box system is less messy since all dog urineandfeces stay inside the box. Actually the Second Nature pellets absorburine much better than normal newspapers. Theonly complication I observed with the pellets is that both puppieslikedto chew and eat them at times. Purina claims that ingestion of thepellets itself is not harmful to the dogs since they are justcompressed papers. This will result in more feces production until thedogs can stop this habit. The dog litter is non-clumping so it will notget stuck inside the canine digestive system unlike normal clumping catlitter. It is considered unsafe to use clumping cat litter as asubstitute for the Purina dog litter. Eventually, both of my dogs grewout of this habit anyway.” I am a small breeder and have been looking for a replacement to the Second Nature litter box for years….. Search is over!!!! I use the large size for my puppies and my adults will use it too. I’d love to see an extra large size for multi-dog households! Well made out of sturdy plastic; chew proof and tip proof. Perfection!!!! Love the seller,, I have linked to her for all my puppy families. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This was a game changer for me! Just ordered three more.”
