I’m looking for a more affordable dog foor for my two pit mixes. I had my older one on blue buffalo, and after awhile, he wouldn’t eat it unless I mixed gravy or something into it. I’m currently using the Rachael Ray grain free dog food for both of my pups, but the younger one seems to have very runny stool. Not as runny as diarrhea, but not solid. We have had him for almost 2 weeks. We could not mix his old food because we pulled him from animal control and they did not tell us what they gave him nor do I think they really knew. So I’m not sure if that is part of the problem. My older pup had slight diarrhea but it quickly became regular since we were able to mix his. But he has lost 6 pounds. I don’t know if it is the food to blame, or just all the playing he does with his new little brother puppy. I also need to put a good amount of weight on my younger puppy, because he is on the skinny side from being in animal control, and god knows what he went through before being surrendered.

When should I switch my dog off puppy food to adult food
Depending on the breed, most dogs will not stop growing for the first year or two. You can continue feeding them a puppy formula until their growth plates have sealed, as long as they are not overweight. However, you must work closely with a veterinarian to assess your puppy’s body condition score. This will ensure that your puppy switches from puppy to adult dog food at the ideal time. Your veterinarian can also recommend how much adult dog food you should give your dog, as too many extra calories and nutrients may be harmful. We have been feeding our Malamute puppies Orijen puppy food. They are now 2 years old and my husband feels the puppy food is still good for them because it has more protein, but I have read it is bad for adult dogs, too much suppliments, I am afraid we are overdosing them on suppliments, please advise:)))I’ve raised every litter and puppy in the last fifteen years on raw and have never had one of my puppies fail his hips and elbows. Yes, it is important to balance the calcium and phosphorus content in the food, but it’s easy to do with raw food – and in light of the dog foods that were recalled due to excesses of some nutrients, the ability to monitor the nutrients in raw food makes it a safer option than kibble in my opinion.Whenever I have an appointment with a large or giant breed puppy, I bring up the subject of large breed puppy foods. Puppies that are going to grow up to be big dogs are predisposed to developmental orthopedic diseases (DOD) like osteochondritis dissecans and hip and elbow dysplasia. (I use an adult weight of 55 pounds as my somewhat arbitrary division between medium and large dogs.) Nutrition, or to be precise, over-nutrition, is an important risk factor of DOD.
