The Easy Walk Harness was created for making walks with your dog enjoy- able and ..
My 2 yr old Yorkiepoo has gone to daycare M-F since she was 8 weeks old. We never trained her on a leash, so she will choke herself, and not stop until I pick her up. She runs full speed the minute we're outside, and doesn't stop like the instructional videos say they do when the leash tightens. Today, we tried out the Easy Walk Harness - first day she's ever worn it, or gone on a walk with it. She didn't pull ONCE! Didn't even try to pull, just walked right by my side for an hour. I consider my dog to be a 12 on the 1-10 "how hard does your dog pull scale". This is simple, easy to put it, and it actually works!!
I have a Cairn Terrier named Riley who is more than a little spoiled and I am afraid I did not do the greatest job training him. When he was a puppy they recommended another gentle leader product which was a head halter (similar to a head halter on a horse) while it stopped the pulling I never felt it fit securely so we moved to a regular collar. We tried other harness's but they seemed to make him pull even more.
How to adjust and put on Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness When you first look at this harness it's a bit of a mental struggle to figure out how to get it on. It seems like a regular harness with the leash attachment on the top of the back but when you look at the pictures and read the instruction you realize that the place where you attach the leash actually goes in the front across the dogs chest.
Each strap has an adjustment and a clasp and this harness has to fit rather snugly or the dog can slip out of it. Once you have it adjusted correctly it stays in adjustment and does not need to be changed unless the dog loses or gains weight.
To put it on I have figured out that the light grey part goes under their stomach so I leave that strap attached to the front one which is black I have trained my dog to just step into the harness and then I snap the one on his back. There is a metal loop to attach a leash in front across the dogs chest. Make sure that you have adjusted it so that this is in the center.
How the Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness works to prevent pulling I am sure there is a technical "Dog Whisperer" type explanation for how this harness prevents pulling but to me it is just common sense. Since the leash attaches in the front in front of the legs across the chest, and well under the chin, when you put this on the first time and the dog tries to take off like he normally does, when he reaches the end of the leash he ends up pulling himself to the side.
When you first use this be careful because if your dog is used to pulling hard against his collar he will take off and when he reaches the end he will whip himself sideways and fall down. Riley did this so until he got used to it I kept the leash close so he would not hurt himself while he was learning the limitations of the harness.
This is probably the only harness that really works without having to train the dog. When I put a regular collar on Riley, he goes right back to his old pulling habit.
Durability We have had the same harness for approx 4yrs now. Even with almost daily walks the harness looks like new and still fits securely. Provided your dog does require a different size this should last a lifetime.
