Tarheel Canine is a progressive training school, teaching the most advanced methods for pet obedience, behavior modification, Police K9s and working dogs. Our instruction is up to date, and you are exposed to numerous methods and philosophies, so you can make choices about what techniques to bring to the table to train dogs of varying temperaments, and with unique training and behavior problems. We seek to keep enrollment small in each class, so that we can deliver individualized hands on instruction and attention. You will be treated as an apprentice and fully involved in the training and business activities of the school. This includes participating in behavioral interviews with clients, training our client’s dogs, and participating in follow-up lessons and in service training. You assist in seminars when given, and there are numerous opportunities to attend special events like competitive obedience and K-9 sports trials, and special training events held with our former students around the mid-Atlantic and southern states. Our former students are available to speak with you, and in many cases, you can visit their training facilities so you can see how they have made successful careers.

Dog Trainer's School | Tarheel Canine
If you are considering our school, and would like more detailed information on our approach to training dogs, from one of Michael's lectures: Philosophy on Dog Training. This course is a great stepping off point for anyone interested in our school, and is a prerequisite for many of our other courses. It details all the fundamentals of our approach to obedience and the dog/handler relationship, and helps the trainer build the “toolbox” he/she will use throughout the training process. This course thoroughly covers classical and operant conditioning, our reward based teaching systems, the use of verbal markers for communication, as well as building behavior through luring, spatial pressure, “leash pressure,” and shaping. We discuss the thoughtful introduction of aversives, and the creation of motivation in your dog through productive play. There will be both a lecture/theory portion, covering the science of the training, and a practical portion, that puts the theory into play. There are no prerequisites for this class. Students must bring a dog for the practical phase or with advanced notice we can arrange for the student to borrow a dog. With the most inclusive canine education available, our School for Dog Trainers will teach you progressive and innovative methods of effectively training dogs and working with people in a way that will make your dog training career a successful one. Unlike most courses, our programs offer you extensive hands-on training that provide you with real-life experience. Our 2017-2018 School for Dog Trainers program schedule is published and our course dates are listed below.
