How to Use a Dog Spray Collar to Stop Barking Safely and Swiftly
You can use homemade citronella spray as part of your dog's barking behavior modification program. Mix 4 ounces of distilled water and 4 ounces of witch hazel together with 30 drops of citronella oil in a spray bottle. When your dog gets riled up and begins to bark, send a light mist of citronella spray in his direction to stop his barking. Never spray a stream of the mixture at him, nor should you spray him if he's barking from fear, stress or anxiety. The ASPCA does not recommend bark collars or punishment as a means to control barking behavior. Instead, the organization endorses ignoring bad behavior and praising and rewarding appropriate behavior. These dog collars usually refer to citronella dog collars, which use a solution made with oils from a type of lemongrass, also effective as a mosquito repellent. You might also find some anti-barking spray collars that use water or lemon juice mist. Unlike some other collars, this one is waterproof in up to 5 feet of water, so your dog can even wear it when splashing about. It is a very simple, lightweight collar that works by using both sound and vibration sensors to detect a bark; this means barks from surrounding dogs do not mistakenly activate the collar which is a common problem in some other spray collars. Everyone knows that the way to discipline or deal with misbehaved cats is to spray them with a bottle of liquid, usually water. Most people do not think to apply the same principle to dogs, but it can be done. Now obviously water does not work, but you can use things like Citronella or lemon juice to help discipline your dog. The best way to go about using Citronella is to buy a Citronella dog collar. These collars works best for stopping your dog from barking unnecessarily, but they can also be used to do other disciplinary tasks, like preventing your dog from running past a certain area. Citronella collars are very much like shock collars obviously without the actual shock part, but they work very similarly.
