Active ingredients: fipronil, (S)-methoprene, etofenprox (Tritak for cats), cyphenothrin (Tritak for dogs).
River Road Veterinary Clinic carries a variety of preventative flea/tick medications. The newest addition to our line of products is Activyl. Activyl Tickplus is available for dogs while Activyl is available for cats. Activyl products are made in the USA and are distributed by Merck animal health. Activyl and Activyl TickPlus are topical medications that should be applied monthly. The active flea prevention ingredient in Activyl is a new drug called indoxacarb. Indoxacarb is extremely effective at killing fleas and preventing infestation. When Activyl is applied to the skin of your pet it spreads throughout their lipid layer (not in their bloodstream). When the flea jumps onto your pet, the flea ingests the indoxacarb either by grooming it off of itself or by biting your pet. The indoxacarb is then bioactivated by the enzymes within the flea’s digestive system. This bioactivation causes the indoxacarb to paralyze and kill the flea.
In addition to indoxacarb, Activyl TickPlus also contains an ingredient known as permethrin. Permethrin is very effective at repelling ticks, but is safe to use on DOGS only. Permethrin is very TOXIC to cats so this product should be used with caution in homes that have both dogs and cats that interact with each other. If you choose to use Activyl TickPlus on your dog the product should dry completely before your dog is allowed to interact with your cat. This can take between 24-48 hours.

Activyl | Flea & Tick Treatment for Dogs & Cats
Activyl is a monthly spot-on flea treatment that works like no other flea product on the market. Activyl works by using a method called bioactivation, a method in which the active ingredient, indoxacarb is fully activated by using the flea's own enzymes. Activyl can be used for both dogs and cats, and kills not only adult fleas, but also flea eggs and larvae too; thereby, breaking the flea's lifecycle. Use Activyl for Dogs, on dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age or older. It is available as 0.51 ml applicators for dogs 4.1-14 lbs, 0.77 ml applicators for dogs 14.1-22 lbs, 1.54 ml applicators for dogs 22.1-44 lbs, 3.08 ml applicators for dogs 44.1-88 lbs and 4.62 ml applicators for dogs 88.1-132 lbs. It is also available for cats 2-9 lbs in 0.51 ml applicators and cats over 9 lbs in 1.03 ml applicators. It lasts for a full 30 days.Do not use Activyl for dogs on cats, or allow your cat to lick or groom a dog treated with Activyl. Do not use on cats or kittens under 2 lbs, or dogs or puppies under 4 lbs, and no kittens or puppies under 8 weeks of age. Certain medications may interact with pesticides. If signs of sensitivity occur, contact your veterinarian immediately. Hold the applicator in an upright position away from your face and snap the tip by bending it and folding it back on itself. Part the hair and place the applicator tip against the skin on the base of the skull. Applying Activyl at the base of the skull will help prevent your pet from licking the product. Squeeze the applicator firmly and apply the entire contents directly to the skin. Do not allow Activyl to run off and do not have contact with the treated area until it is completely dry. Reapply Activyl every 30 days. For Larger Dogs: Start applying the contents between the shoulder blades working your way down to the tail while applying Activyl in 2-3 spots along the way. Make sure you thoroughly part the hair on each spot so the applicator touches the skin and not just the fur.
